RailRoad Approved
Sports 50
I don't have much good to say about modern Quartz Seiko's from the mass production line. The only thing RailRoad Approved about these now is the Dial, otherwise its the same watch as a non RailRoad model. In the old Days the RailRoad model would have been produced in Japan and have a better movement but Seiko seems to have lost interest in Quality RailRoad models.
Still I am a bit nostalgic, I have a very old first generation? Quartz Seiko RailRoad (still running strong after a long "scavenge for parts" rebuild). It's one of the Jeweled 0903's (I think) If I remember correctly and I believe the Jeweled 0903's were only in the RailRoad models otherwise you got the standard 0903. So when a RailRoad Seiko comes along at a good price I can't help my self.
This one has been around since late 1997 and was sold in early 1998. The retail price for this was $135.00 but it sold for $86.40 after store discounts. I paid much less for it on EBay in September 2005 and its in remarkable shape for its age. With only minor touching up it will pass for new old stock.
I already removed the movement and adjusted the second hand so that it would tick on the dial indicators instead of in between as shown in the photos. I also replaced the case back seal (the crown seal was still great) and hand sanded the braclet and clasp to get a better idea of the extent of wear thus the sanding marks trail off in an arc at the end of the sanding stroke. When I get this piece out to the workshop Ill run it over the brush/satin wheel and restore it to its original clean brushed and polished finish. I'll also have to pick up a battery for the watch sometime soon.
Also I took a picture of the watch and the note from the seller informing me
that it would need a new battery and the seller even included three dollars
for the battery which I thought was very nice of them, especially since this
watch didn't sell for as much as the seller (or I) thought it would.
EBay is a weird place, one week something like this might sell for more than it cost new, the next week you can't give it away, go figure.
